Meals have a way of bringing people closer together. There is nothing like a large gathering of family and friends. Enticing smells wafting through the house are a beacon to the kitchen. There may be someone sneaking a taste or simply wondering when dinner will be ready. More often than not, the kitchen trespassers stick around for conversation. At my home, the kitchen is definitely the heart of our home. We gather around our small island or lean against a counter while just enjoying being together.
Verde Sangria?! Yes, the Sangria is Green this week. I mean, can you blame me for going green? It is that time of year. I love the Green for St. Patrick’s Day, but also because it is Spring…or supposed to be. I am starting my seeds indoors now. Hoping for sprouts in the next few days. I can not wait to grow my own herbs, veggies and fruits. This Winter was a long one and I am happy to put it behind me. In celebration of all things Green, #SundaySupper is sharing a theme of Eat Your Greens… or in my case Drink Your Greens. Sangria is a wine cocktail that has been spiked a bit with an extra spirit or two and mixed with fresh fruits. What can be wrong about that?
Game Day! The big day, the one that all of us die-hard football fans and not so die-hard fans can still come together for a great party and fun commercials. The excitement builds all day long until Kick Off. In my family, this is a big day. Football is something we all enjoy. The food is also a bonus. Who doesn’t love all the appetizers, snacks and finger foods? For all of us adults in the world… who doesn’t love to pair all the goodies with a great wine? (more…)
This week’s #SundaySupper theme is Reflections and Resolutions. Fitting right? It is that time of year when we sit down and reflect on the year that has passed and set resolutions/goals for the new year ahead. For me, this past year has been filled with many new and exciting things. 2013 has been a year of transitions. I accepted a new position with the school district that I work for. It has been a wonderful experience and I am truly thankful for it, but it also cemented the end of my role as a stay at home mom. My oldest has gone off to high school. This is still strange to me. My baby will be in middle school next year. This Christmas was the first year in my life as a mother, where there were more clothes and shoes under the tree than toys. All transitions, one phase of life into another. (more…)
This recipe is one of my all time favorites. I love everything about eating fresh and eating what is in season. The ingredients are at the peak of flavor. Eating seasonally also makes things just a little bit more special. If you eat blackberries all year long, do you truly appreciate when they make their return to the vines? Is there anything better than the sun warmed fruit? Well, sure, but they are really hard to beat. With only the berries that I have put up from the summer to last me until the next harvest… the anticipation is already building. (more…)
What a week it has been. This Christmas season seems so much shorter than in the past. We hung lights in our windows just last night. I love the glow of the Christmas lights. If we hung lights up all year, would they lose their magic? Perhaps… (more…)
This has been my first year blogging from my very own ” .com”. Moving over from my rambling blogger blog, was so exciting. My wonderful Aunt Brenda helped me to set it all up. Thank you Aunt Brenda! This year, I have made new friends, entertained old ones and throughout kept my family well fed. Even if I had to photograph the food before they could eat it. Not too bad a trade off, I hope. Blogging has been a great learning experience. I found that I love writing as much as I love reading. I am pretty much in love with words and language. Pretty nice for someone who makes her living in an elementary school library and literacy support program. (more…)
Thanksgiving has been packed away. The Christmas decorations are in full force at my house. The tree is trimmed and stockings are hung. It is one of my most favorite times of year. I love the hustle and bustle of the Holiday season. We try to hit all the parties and see everyone that we can. Then there is the baking. I love to bake for my family and friends during the Holiday season. Cookies, cakes, bread puddings… just to name a few. Sometimes, you need a quick dessert, something you can throw together, a no-bake kind of pie to take with you to a last minute potluck. I have just the pie for you. (more…)
One of my family’s most favorite of ingredients is cheese. We like them all. Sharp cheddar to delicate mozzarella, the flavors can be so versatile and compliment just about any dish. Really, can there ever be too much cheese? (more…)
We love pancakes at my house. They are a great way to kick off a Saturday. Easy to whip together and fill bellies for a while. Today was no exception. My boys had friends over for the night so I had extra bellies to fill. Pancakes it was. My youngest loves all things carrot cake and for special days, he always requests carrot cake pancakes. They had been on my mind, but I wanted to try something else. Today, I experiments and fell in love with Apple Pie Pancakes. Yumm-o! (more…)
