Not So Deviled Eggs for a #SundaySupper Easter

010Pretty dresses, lilies and bonnets at church, bunnies, eggs and baskets at home… those are the images I think of when I think of Easter. However, I am the mom of boys. There are no pretty dresses and bonnets. Baskets are not filled with marshmallow ducks or chocolate bunnies. My boys like beef jerky. Cashiers must think I give the lamest Easter Baskets ever, but my boys love them. I do indulge in fancy egg decorating. I have even taken a class on Ukrainian Egg decorating, Pysanka.

eggs1We raise chickens at my home and we celebrate all eggs. I love that the kids still get excited to go out to the coop and check the nesting boxes. I probably get more excited than they do. Our chickens lay many colors of eggs. We get a light blue egg, white eggs and different shades of brown eggs. These eggs are pretty all on their own, but decorating is also fun.


Easter Egg hunts dominate our family traditions for the Holiday. I remember my parents hiding them for my brother and I.  Now, we take turns hiding them for my nephews, niece and my boys. The kids run around in snowsuits some years and some years it is fairly warm for a Michigan Spring day.  What is someone supposed to do with all these Easter Eggs after the hunt has been done? Well in my family, we make deviled eggs.  Have I mentioned that I love eggs? I do. They are so versatile, you do not have to stick to the traditional deviled egg.


For this #SundaySupper, recipes are being shared for Easter and Passover dishes. There are some great breads, appetizers, sides, main dishes and mouth watering desserts. I am sharing my recipe for Not So Deviled Eggs. These eggs are an awesome take on deviled eggs. There is cumin for a smokey flavor and marinated shrimp for that acidity to compliment the creamy yolks. This recipe does contain shrimp, but can be made without if allergies are a concern.


Not So Deviled Eggs


  • 6 Large Eggs
  • 1/2 cup Mayonnaise
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoon Sour Cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon Ground Cumin
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • 10-15 Small Shrimp (I used frozen Salad Shrimp)
  • Red Wine Vinegar (for marinating the shrimp)
  • Cherry Tomato (finely diced)
  • Green Onion (finely diced )
  • Asiago Cheese (finely shredded for garnishing)


Step 1
Hard Boil your eggs. Set your shrimp to marinate in a few dashes to red wine vinegar.
Step 2
Cool the eggs in ice water. Then peel and cut in half.
Step 3
Put yolks in a separate bowl. Mash them smooth and add in the mayonnaise. Stir
Step 4
Add in the sour cream, cumin and salt and pepper. Stir well then put in a pipping bag.
Step 5
Fill your eggs with the yolk mixture. Top with shrimp. Then top with finely diced tomatoes and green onions. Finally add a dash of finely shredded asiago cheese.
Step 6
Chill then serve.

  1. You know when I told my, back then, new Goan family in India that we should hide eggs so that kids could go and search them, they all looked at me as if I was totally nuts! lol

    Glad I am not mad after all. haha

    I love the choice of spices for your deviled eggs, I feel like picking them out of the screen right now. =P

  17. My mother-in-law keeps chickens and they too lay all sorts of different coloured eggs. My daughter is 19 months now and her favourite activity when she goes and sees her Granny is to put on her wellies and go out to check for eggs. 🙂 This is a very clever use of easter eggs, great combination of spices

    • What awesome memories for her! My nephews are toddlers and they love to come over and check the egg boxes. My youngest calls me Aunt Shannon Who Chases Chickens… lol I seem to always be chasing an escapee when he comes over.

    • Thank you!! I still see each egg as a thing of beauty. There is just something right in the world when chickens can be chickens. Peaceful. Scratching in the yard and laying eggs. The pretty colors are such a bonus. 🙂

  22. Love your devilled egg recipe! There are just so many ways to devil an egg… They are one of my favorite things at this time of year. In my family we made egg salad with our Easter eggs, and a little bit of the dye always made it through to the white of the egg… made it extra special, lol!
