Blackberry Caprese Salad for Recipe Countdown 2013

Blackberry Caprese This recipe is one of my all time favorites. I love everything about eating fresh and eating what is in season. The ingredients are at the peak of flavor. Eating seasonally also makes things just a little bit more special. If you eat blackberries all year long, do you truly appreciate when they make their return to the vines? Is there anything better than the sun warmed fruit? Well, sure, but they are really hard to beat. With only the berries that I have put up from the summer to last me until the next harvest… the anticipation is already building.

This post was originally shared as a linky party for the #SaladBar. It is my take on a traditional caprese salad with fresh mozzarella and basil. I then paired this with a balsamic reduction that sent these ingredients out of this world… or at least in my opinion. For the original post and links to some awesome salads look right here. 

BlackBerry Caprese Salad with Blackberry Balsamic Reduction


  • 1 pint Blackberries (Reserve some for the skewer and some for a reduction)
  • 1 heaped tablespoon Light Brown Sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Balsamic Vinegar
  • 1/2 Lemon (Juiced)
  • 1 pint Small Fresh Mozzarella balls
  • Fresh Basil Leaves


Step 1
Set aside berries to add to your skewers. Next combine the remaining berries into a nonreactive pot and turn heat to medium high
Step 2
Add the juice of 1/2 a lemon to the berries and the light brown sugar. Mix well
Step 3
As this heats and starts to bubble, add in the tablespoon of Balsamic vinegar.
Step 4
I prefer to keep the heat at medium to a medium high to let the berries cook and the sauce to reduce. Take care not to burn your sugars with too high of heat.
Step 5
Let sauce cool. Assemble the skewers. Serve together.
