Welcome to my World!
Aka… @VillageGirlBlog
I am Shannon. My interests include crafting of all sorts, backyard chickens, gardening, preserving my harvest by canning and freezing. I am a Foodie. Fresh, local ingredients are what I strive to cook with/for my family. Blogging and photographing now comes with the Foodie territory. I am a busy sports mom. You know, the one who wears the team colors and shouts “Go Team!!” at every opportunity…Yup that’s me. I attend all the practices and games. I sit in the rain, snow and extreme heat. I carry “trunk blankets” in the trunk of my car. You never know when you may need one, either at baseball or football season. Those fold up chairs in a bag? I am a connoisseur of the camping/sport chair.
I am a sucker for animals. Really, I love them all. It probably comes down to the fact that I believe they all need me. They do, don’t they? I should really face the fact that I like to be needed.
What else screams Shannon? Reading! Reading and writing but I love reading. I put away at least 3 to 4 books a week. I do not watch much tv or any movies really for that matter. I’m a book girl. I like them all.
I am a self-proclaimed country girl and nerd all at the same time, this is who I am. I preserve food and talk to my chickens. I wear a lot of sports hoodies. I read… a lot, and I am not hip to the game when it comes to tv shows and movies but I am hip to heirloom veggies, backyard chickens, raising boys and loving life.
Well this is me in a nut shell. I hope you stick around and check out life in my little village. There will be food, photos, crazy chicken stories, motherhood tales and more.
Spring In My Village – a photo essay

Hi Friends! Spring seems to have finally hit Michigan and let me just tell you, not a moment too soon in my opinion. I can’t wait to get my hands in the dirt and start planting. There is a big garden going in with 5 different varieties of heirloom tomatoes. Also some purple carrots that I am excited about. School is almost out for the boys and me. I have to admit, the prospect of the last day of school is every bit as exciting as it was when I was younger and a student. I have been busy snapping snap shots on Instagram of all the great changes that are going on with Spring finally settling in.
Stuffed Poblano Peppers for Cinco de Mayo #SundaySupper
The 5th of May, or more popularly known as Cinco de Mayo, is the day for celebrating the Mexican Armies’ victory over the invading French Army in the Battle of Puebla. It is popular in the United States as a way to commemorate the battle but also as a day of Mexican Culture and Heritage. This week’s theme centers around these celebrations and is hosted by #SundaySupper’s Jen at Juanita’s Cocina . She has done an awesome job of compiling all the fun recipes and will be hosting tonight’s chat on Twitter at 7pm Est.
Broccoli Bacon Salad for #SundaySupper
A few years ago, at my sister-in-law’s baby shower, I sampled the very best salad ever. It was crunchy and sweet. There was a slight tang to the dressing that matched smokey undertones. I did not just have one plate, I went back for seconds. It was awesome. I knew that I had to try and recreate this salad.
Chicken and Veggie Burritos for a quick #WeekdaySupper
It is baseball season and what does that mean? I am crazy baseball mom once again. Both of my boys play baseball on travel leagues this year so baseball season is a bit more crazy than usual. Crazy is good right? It is fun and I have to admit, I enjoy watching them play ball…a lot.
Scones inspired by the Movie Tea With Mussolini #SundaySupper
This week’s theme for #SundaySupper is Movie Inspired Dishes hosted by the ever talented Heather at Girlichef . My family loves movies, from my husband to my sons we have fans from all the movie genres at my house. Did anyone notice that I left myself out of that last sentence? I did, I have to admit… My name is Shannon and I do not watch movies. Isn’t that awful? I have always been a reader and rarely sit down to watch a movie. The boys can pop on a movie and I can read my book and we are all happy. Date night with my husband? I would rather catch a Detroit Tigers Game, but I do sit through the occasional movie for him. With my lack of Movie knowledge, I was worried about this theme. What would I make, did I even know a movie that would inspire my taste buds?
Fun Feathers… Over at Community Chickens

Are you picking out new chicks? Planning to add chickens to your existing flock or starting a flock? I just posted over at Community Chickens about a fun, fancy, feather color that I love to see in my backyard. Laced is the term, as in Silver Laced, Golden Laced, and Blue Laced Red… in my instance.
Spring’s Chicks to 4-H Projects
Hello Everyone! I have a new post over at Community Chickens.
Not So Deviled Eggs for a #SundaySupper Easter
Pretty dresses, lilies and bonnets at church, bunnies, eggs and baskets at home… those are the images I think of when I think of Easter. However, I am the mom of boys. There are no pretty dresses and bonnets. Baskets are not filled with marshmallow ducks or chocolate bunnies. My boys like beef jerky. Cashiers must think I give the lamest Easter Baskets ever, but my boys love them. I do indulge in fancy egg decorating. I have even taken a class on Ukrainian Egg decorating, Pysanka.
First Day of Spring…and Taco Cups
Today is the first official day of Spring. If I was judging by the weather, I would not believe it, however it is almost 7:30 pm and it is still very much light outside. Yay to longer days!
Spinach and Goat Cheese Quesadilla for #WeekdaySupper
In my household, we enjoy our meal times. I prefer to cook instead of ordering take out or stopping for fast food. I believe in using fresh ingredients to make the best meals for my husband and children. My husband works the night shift and I work days, so throughout the week, we are opposites for everything. Dinner time is the one meal that we as a family can all sit down together. It is the time of day that we can talk about our days, plans, generally just what is going on in our world. We may not always sit down at the table, but you will find us sharing a daily meal, even if it is off the kitchen island, on tv trays or in our dining room. (more…)
